WHY HONEYBEES NEED OUR HELP
Starting in 2006, there has been a drastic increase in the disappearance of honey bee colonies in North America with approximately 25-30% of colonies dying every year. This phenomenon where a colony’s worker bees abruptly disappear, is called Colony Collapse Disorder. There is a similar phenomenon occurring with bumble bees who are another important pollinator for many crops native to North America.
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, DAVIS HONEY BEE RESEARCH FACILITY
As we hope you can tell, we NEED to save the bees…and fast! If we don’t act soon our food supply and environment as we know it will drastically change. The current situation is unsustainable and we need to do everything in our power to make a difference. That is why we have chosen to support the the University of California, Davis, Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility as our US partner! This facility is the largest state-supported apiculture facility in North America! At UC Davis many of the top bee researchers are working to learn more about bee biology, genetics, breeding, bee health and meeting the needs of California’s agricultural industry all with the goal of saving the bees.
CANADIAN HONEY COUNCIL
The Canadian Bee Research Fund is a charity that is a joint project of the Canadian Honey Council and the Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists (CAPA). The CBRF provides funding for bee research in Canada and we have chosen them as our Canadian charity partner! Some recent research projects include studies relating to pesticides, mites and bee resistance mechanisms.
