If you have extra time on your hands, one of the best things you can do is log out of Netflix (we know, Tiger King is almost impossible to resist, but we believe in you!) and pick up one of those dusty books that you’ve been meaning to read. And if you don’t know where to start, our hive team has some great recs…
Everything is F*cked — A Book About Hope
Dahlia’s Pick : “I love this book because it is a straightforward honest depiction of the mind and how we are using it to become better human beings.”
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Carly's Pick: “I’m re-reading one of my all time faves, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This series shaped my childhood and may be responsible for the creative ways I view the world and my constant desire to infuse magic into the mundane. With so much uncertainty in the world, re-reading this book has been incredibly nourishing. I love returning to this magical world for a brief escape, and then coming back to tackle everything in front of me with more hope.”
Becoming Supernatural
Cat's Pick: "I love how this book bridges the realms of spirituality, neuroscience, epigenetics, and quantum physics. Joe is not a guru sharing doctrine but an average person sharing tools for ordinary people to reach extraordinary states of being."
Awaken the Spirit Within
Sabrina’s Pick: “This book is a powerful read that taps into our spiritual side. Giving us the tools to find answers to questions such as; what is our purpose, our passions and really understanding what is next in our journey of life. It’s a must read!”
Quiet
Rachel’s Pick: “As an introvert, Quiet reminds me that just because I may not be the loudest person in the room does not mean my ideas and voice do not have incredible value.”
The Overstory
Jordyn’s Pick: This novel is a beautiful puzzle. The seemingly unrelated short stories at the start of this book weave into each other and demonstrate how (unexpectedly) interconnected humans are with the trees that surround us. I'm halfway through and all I can say is it’s really a perspective shifter.
Just Go to Bed
Jake's Pick: "Since my oldest child was born I’ve been reading primarily kids books - so I thought I’d share one of our current favourites. I picked “Just Go to Bed” by Mercer Mayer; author of the Little Critter series. I remember loving these books when I was a kid. Now I’m reading these books to my own children and rediscovering how awesome these stories were."
The Universe Has Your Back
Chelsea's Pick: "I love this book so much, I have stopped counting the number of times I have read/referenced it. There are highlights & notes all through the pages, as I like to come back to it as a reminder and guide during times I feel like I need some direction. For me, this book is about so much more than spirituality... it's a reminder that we all have the power within us to choose how we want to see the world and events around us—you just have to lean in, ask the questions, get real with your actions/behaviours and really listen to what comes up for you."
The Mastery of Love
Jodie's Pick: "This book was recommended by another BKN team member to read. As I have spent the past year really diving into self work and becoming my true authentic self, I was excited to read this. I read it in a matter of a week, and it really shifted my perspective on love... starting with the love for yourself. I have so many paragraphs underlined with beautiful insight on how we can see life through the eyes of love. I passed it along to my friend to read and I received a message from her stating that it has changed her entire perspective on life and it made my day! There is an incredible prayer for self love at the end of the book that I recorded myself saying and listen to every morning."
