Electrolytes—it’s what humans crave. Why? Get ready for some Hydration Science 101.
Electrolytes are unique minerals that carry a small electrical charge and help the body with muscle contractions, fluid absorption, and energy production—they're a pretty big deal.
Electrolytes are particularly important when you sweat. Sweating causes your body to lose water—along with lots of precious nutrients. If you don’t replenish those lost nutrients and fluids, your body will stop functioning efficiently and your energy levels will drop.
In order to intake fluid quickly into cells, your body needs the help of electrolytes—like sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. That's why mainstream energy drink manufacturers obsess over them so much. They're your secret weapon to staying hydrated, feeling good, and getting back to 100% fast.
But here's the issue: electrolyte replacement/sports drinks are often really unhealthy. Many of them are bright neon and hyper sweet, notoriously packed with refined sugar, highly processed additives, and artificial dyes. (When your favorite flavor of sports drink is "blue", that's a red flag.)
But it doesn't have to be that way. Going back to the science, to make an effective sports drink all you really need is some form of mineral-rich sugar, salt, and water. Believe it or not, that simple concoction is what power drinks like Gatorade used to be.
To help you stay hydrated and healthy, we created a simple (and much cleaner) recipe to help you replenish your body post-sweat all summer long.
